What is albanian sign?

language

Albanian Sign Language (ASL) is the sign language used by the Deaf community in Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia. It is a visual-gestural language that uses signs, facial expressions, and body language to communicate.

ASL is based on French Sign Language (LSF) and has been influenced by Yugoslav Sign Language, as well as Italian and American Sign Language. It has its own grammar and word order, and is distinct from any spoken language, including Albanian.

The Albanian Deaf community has been working to promote and preserve ASL, with the establishment of the Albanian Deaf Association and the Albanian Sign Language Academy. However, access to education and resources for learning sign language in Albania is limited, particularly in rural areas, which can create barriers to communication and inclusion for Deaf individuals.

Efforts are being made to increase awareness and education about ASL, and to promote its recognition as an official language of Albania. In 2020, the Albanian parliament approved an amendment to the constitution recognizing ASL as an official language, which was hailed as a victory by the Deaf community.
